Bellies as God: The Seduction of Comfort

August 19, 2017

Peace doesn't come through comfort; comfort comes through peace.

The physical components of comfort (abundant heat/cooling, abundant food, proper clothing, physical safety) are seductive... they FEEL like comfort because they’re necessary to an extent to the life of the body. In this way they're spiritual as well as physical. But after a point, they comprise the comfort of the WORLD and NOT the SPIRIT which, after a point we've long passed, has nothing to do with the world.

Spiritual comfort, on the other hand, embraces DIScomfort. It's why some say, "religion is for people who don't want to go to hell; spirituality is for people who have been there." Traversing our own inner hell, unearthing our own demons and compassionately subduing them, is the work that radiates into a physical comfort that can be trusted, that's authentic and earned, and that - by the way - heals the world.

On the other hand, putting comfort ahead of spirit is what brings us to the world we have today; a continual round of hellish events. Our comforts have become our focus. We’ve traded life, liberty and happiness in order to attain them in amounts that actually choke our souls. What we define as “security” feels like wisdom, but it’s really a lie; we have far more than we need or that’s helpful to have. We can tell this because it’s easy to see that we’ve become graspy and narcissistic. Our bellies have become our gods, and it shows.

Spirit first. Physical second. This is the creation story. This is the miracle of manifestation. This is the meek inheriting the earth. This is the faith that moves mountains.

This is how it all works.
